Students need to meet at least the minimum standards below. The computer should be fast enough and have enough memory and disk space to provide satisfactory performance over a usable life of at least two years.
The following are minimum hardware requirements for students entering Georgia Tech in Summer & Fall 2019.Form Factor: Notebook or laptop with a physical keyboard and trackpad/mouse input. A minimum battery life of 4 hours is required. Processor: 64-bit multi-core processor or better.Memory: 8 GB or more. For best performance, we recommend that you install as much memory as is affordable at the time of purchase.Hard Drive: 128 GB minimum storage (solid state or hard drive or hybrid), or larger (256GB recommended).External backup: Local external hard drive or cloud backup; for local backup, an external hard drive with double the size of the internal hard drive is recommended. Networking: Dual-band wireless 802.11n capable.Accessories (optional): USB flash drive, Ethernet cable, and anti-theft cable lock. Georgia Tech's suggested accessories include dongles for connecting laptop to an external display or projector. Note that most tablet devices do not meet the minimum hardware requirements above. While they may initially provide sufficient performance for basic tasks such as web browsing or simple word processing, use of technical software in courses may be difficult. Shipping and computer order turnaround
Dell, Lenovo, and Microsoft Surface orders through our website are special orders, meaning that they are built-to-order and are sent directly from the manufacturer. We do not stock Dell or Lenovo or Surface laptops in store. It typically takes 3-5 business days for the computer to be built, and once the computer ships, shipping takes an additional 3-5 business days. As these computers exclusively ship from over seas, there is no expedited shipping available for these units.
We stock our Apple laptops, so for default configurations (as listed in the Technical Specifications on each Mac webpage), shipping turnaround is usually 24 hours once we receive your order. However, for custom Apple configurations (configure-to-order or "CTO"), an additional 3-5 business days are needed (on average) for Apple to build the computer. Like with Dell and Lenovo orders, there is no expedited shipping available for custom Apple laptops.
If you select an expedited shipping method for your order, it will apply to the shipping of your order from the store to your shipping address. CTO orders from Apple, Dell, and Lenovo must ship to the store first.
When configuring your Apple computer, choosing soley the extended AppleCare Protection Plan warranty will not delay Apple computer purchases.
Turnaround times may vary. We will notify you via e-mail once your order is processed of your specific turnaround times for your order.
